The wash is complete which has toned the Wallis Paper surface. I’ll wait a few minutes until the surface is dry before I begin working on the painting. I could add more pastel colors if I think I need them at any time I’m doing the wash, but I find it usually isn’t necessary because I’ve learned from experience it really doesn’t matter. The intent is to tone the paper completely so you don’t see the original surface colors. The colors I use can be like colors or complimentary colors and I’ve done paintings both ways. Here I’ve done like colors so you can see the painting as I as they dry. Not to worry you’re going to paint over it anyway.

Note: You can use water, denatured alcohol, Gamsol which is 100% pure odorless mineral spirits or Turpenoid as a wetting agent to move the pastel. I now prefer to use Gamsol as the wetting agent because it holds the colors better. Try the different kinds of media and find out for yourself what you like the best.
